Keep David on the team no matter what!! To lose him and his vast cycling knowledge of the sport and France would be a great loss to the eurosport commentary team and the sport as well.

Re: Poll: Should David Duffield be replaced?      8-Jul-09 12:14 PM
Yes. He rambles and rambles and rambles. He starts telling you one thing, goes off at a tangent to something else, then interjects something else only marginally related, then goes back to where he was, then off at another tangent, then something will happen in the race so he'll talk about that and he might eventually get back to the point he was making to start with. Only for it not to be that interesting in the first place. I'm sure he's a really nice bloke but I find his commentary at best mildly interesting and at worst annoying. But mostly boring.

YES,yes,yes,yes to infinity & beyond!
I gave up on Eurosport coverage simply because of Duffers, I'd much rather a condensed to the point coverage ala ITV4 than listen to the demented ramblings of this fool!

No get rid of the arrogant david harm man. David comes to races cares about races and he isn't arrogant. Harm man must have won eight tours to be so arrogant.

Re: Poll: Should David Duffield be replaced?      3-Nov-09 10:33 AM
Please, please replace David Duffield. I'm sure he's a nice guy but he hasn't a clue what's going on. In Eurosports coverage of the World Cup Track Championships at Manchester all he could contribute, when referring to the contestant during a Gold Medal performance at World Record time, was a staggering "I spoke to his mother yesterday" !!**!! He then proceeded to repeat EXACTLY was his able co-commentator has just told us about the coach 'marking the line'. This is taking the audience for idiots and an insult to all the British team who have trained and raced so hard to achieve the results they richly deserve.
Compare Eurosports commentating with BBC2 and Hugh Porter - there IS no comparison.
I find it impossible to watch any cycling event on any channel where he is contributing.
So, yes, David Duffield should be replaced. Now.

A big YES. What a pompous useless individual. He does anything except commentate on the race. Send dull monotone Kelly with him. Today DD spent half the bike race talking about climbs in England.

Every year we have this thread........

If it wasnt for Duffield a generation of cycling fans will not be watchin g the sport. His commentary on the stages which marco pantani broke away are legendary and for me he is the best cycling commentator that eurosport will ever have. His excitement is second to none. Why he gets slagged off soo much is unbelieveable.

No way should DD be replaced. He has done soo much for cycling through his commnetary. His brought through a generation of cycling fans. I can still remember watching Marco Pantani in the Giro and TDF breaking away and attacking and David Duffields commentary. The mans a legend imo.

This forum is starting to have a lot of bitter people I tell ya.

It won't happen for many more years though, because Nature will take it's toll.

Born 20th May 1931 and that makes him 78 at the moment.
He's a lovely chap so send him a Birthday Card @ Eurosport.

Remember he like $%^& Cat Photo's

Re: Poll: Should David Duffield be replaced?     15-Jul-09 04:03 PM
Maj you are right, DD is a legend, but so are Kenneth Wolstenholme, Brian Johnston, Murray Walker and Peter O'Sullevan for their fabulous commentary. However unlike DD all the rest retired at the top of their game before age got the better of them.

This years Dauphiné Libéré commentary was just a train wreck and in the end plain embarrassing. DD couldn’t finish a sentence and they just tailed off to nothing, and when James Richardson asked him what Carlos Sastre's chances were of winning the Tour (in the Eurosport studio a couple of days ago), DD rambled on about something or other and in the end Stephen Roche had to interrupt and ask DD again what Carlos Sastre's chances were.

Im not bitter Maj. DD's commentary of the Tour 10-15 years ago is the reason why I got into watching cycling. Yes he waffled on about wine, cheese and chateaus, but there was always insightful cycling commentary as well, and that was part of the charm. But that was 15 years ago and now he is 78 and the insightful commentary that always complemented the pictures has gone. His commentary ruined the Dauphiné coverage this year and in the end I had to mute it.

Yes Maj he is a legend, but in the end every legend needs to retire gracefully before they ruin their legacy.

Very well put James H.
I don`t think anyone can deny DD`s enthusiasm and past glories as a commentator but there comes a time when you have to call it a day gracefully and alas DD has gone way past that stage. The Dauphine as you say was just unbelievably bad.
Unfortunately for us the Harmon/Kirby chuckle brothers act is beginning to sound like a poor mans DD in his prime. I`m sure Sean Kelly must wander off out of the commentary box at times to escape the drivel these two come out with.

He has driven so many of my non cycling friends away, I am also in an athletic club and my friends turn off if Duffield is commentating, they all say he is so crass, in athletics there are some very intelligent informed commentators like Steve Cram, Brendan Foster and Jonathan Edwards to name a few. Why should they suffer somebody like Duffield. One of my athletic friends said and I quote " some village somewhere must be short of their idiot".

Re: Poll: Should David Duffield be replaced?     18-Jul-09 03:48 PM
it was because of David Duffields commentating that got us interested in the Tour de France it was good hearing about his experiences with food, wine and getting to know the areas it made the tour more interesting the whole coverage by eurosport was much better and it was fun to see other things that were going Carlton and Sean are good but David Harmon is boring just talks technical and silly things whether we like the outfits, at least David Duffied made us laugh and tallked about normal things he is missed motor racing isnt the same without Murray Walker and the same with Golf if Peter Alliss wasn't there by the way every one makes mistakes just listen to the commentries naw
