Dramatic photos show horrific aftermath of BMW smash as driver escapes serious injury

These dramatic photos show the devastating aftermath of a crash in Newton Heath in the early hours of this morning.

The one-car smash happened on Briscoe Lane at around 4.15am today (Monday, April 29). Police officers, firefighters and paramedics raced to the scene.

A cordon was put in place on the street and the road was closed off for some time. Miraculously, the driver of the white BMW escaped without serious injuries.

The man was taken to hospital from the scene, but his injuries were not believed to be extremely serious, the Manchester Evening News understands. A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police confirmed their Serious Collision Investigation Unit were not investigating, which suggest the injuries were not life-threatening or life-changing.

The fire service confirmed they made the area safe and 'assisted with the treatment' of the driver before paramedics took over his care. A spokesperson for the North West Ambulance Service said a male was taken to hospital.

Pictures taken on the scene showed the car left completely wrecked after the smash. The front of the car was fully crushed with the vehicle appearing to have turned onto its roof in the crash.

Debris was left strewn across the road within the cordon. In a statement, a spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: "At just before 4.15am today (Monday April 29) two fire engines from Blakely and Philips Park fire stations plus the technical response unit from Leigh fire station attended a crash involving one car on Briscoe Lane, Newton Heath.

"Crews worked alongside colleagues from Greater Manchester Police to make the area safe and assisted in the treatment of one male before handing them to the care of colleagues from North West Ambulance Service. Crews were in attendance for around two hours."

Stagecoach posted about the road closure on X this morning. The bus company said: "Route 74/76/76A. Due to a Police incident Briscoe Lane is closed. Buses are on diversion via Oldham Rd and will be unable to serve Briscoe Lane."
